Empty coves, hilltop chapels and nowhere to be
Ios is the island people mean to visit for a day and end up rearranging their trip around. Start with a slow climb of whitewashed steps into Chora and the little hilltop chapels while the morning is still cool. Then the coast: the broad sweep of Mylopotas, the clear shallows of Koumbara, and the winding southern road down to Manganari, where the bays are so quiet you'll think we made them up. Lunch is wherever the day lands. Late on, we bring you back to Gialos for sundown over the masts — drink in hand, nothing left to organise.
The Cyclades with the volume turned down: Chora climbing its hill in white tiers to Panagia Gremiotissa, the long golden crescent of Mylopotas, and Manganari keeping its secret on the southern shore for anyone willing to take the road.
